Plasterboard – Why Can’t I Put It In A Skip?
Over the past few years, one of the major issues to have developed in the waste removal industry is whether or not plasterboard disposal can be placed into your skip. When it comes to skip hire in Sheffield and across the country, we know that plasterboard disposal is often one of the major waste products from industrial, destruction and construction undertakings.
Plasterboard is banned from making an appearance in landfills, along with a variety of other waste products, and most skip companies will refuse to accept even the smallest trace of plasterboard in the skip at all.
Why Is Plasterboard Banned From Landfill?
As of April, 2009, plasterboard and a range of other items were banned from landfills. The principal reason behind this move was that, when land-filled with other mixed waste residues, putrefaction occurs. The end result of this is that Hydrogen Sulphide is produced. H2S is a colourless gas which has the odour of rotten eggs, making it unpleasant to work around.
However, as it is also heavier than air, extremely poisonous, corrosive, flammable and even highly explosive, it is too dangerous to allow in landfills and other environments.
The Environment Agency’s statement says that; “the land-filling of gypsum and other high sulphate bearing wastes with biodegradable waste has been prohibited in England and Wales since July 2005.” However, up until 2009, most skip companies maintained that separate disposal was not necessary where construction waste contained less than 10% sulphate.
What Should I Do About Plasterboard?
Here at Skip Hire UK, we tend to recommend hiring a mini-skip alongside one of our larger models if you know that plasterboard will be present in your waste. No plasterboard is allowed in landfills, meaning that it isn’t allowed in the skip itself.
However, with one of our affordable mini-skips, you can have a self-contained and dedicated area to throw away your plasterboard without having to worry about the creation of harmful gases. It is important to ensure that you keep the plasterboard mini skip dry and free from water.
It is important to keep Gypsum and plasterboard clear of all other materials, and ensuring that your skip hire company know, right from the start, that you intend to put plasterboard in the skip. Not all companies are willing to deal with plasterboard, so it is important that you choose one that is.
